Our “keep it simple - stupid” canvas day pack built for New Zealand’s rugged conditions. Clean, sturdy construction, minimal seams, C-Canvas for durable water resistance (and less noise in the bush) and that traditional, diamond-in-the-rough feel.

The size, simplicity and all-round toughness make this a popular pack for commuters, walkers, trampers and hunters alike. Also, in a nice (and, it has to be admitted, unplanned) turn of events, the Miklat meets sizing requirements for cabin baggage – another string to this pack’s bow. An extremely versatile Cactus classic.

If you love the no nonsense approach of the Miklat, but need more serious load carrying capacity, check out the BLT. If you love the Miklat but need to carry ice tools and crampons, you could get an attachment added for an extra cost. Email us here or call 0800 122 682 for more info.

  • A generous size main bag, made of C-Canvas for water resistance and that soft but bombproof feel

  • Comfortable foam padded harness and curved shoulder straps for all day comfort, and a 38mm webbing waist belt for stability

  • 3D lid pocket for map, GPS, hat, gloves or spare ammo

  • A double thickness base and rand for durability

  • Compression straps on the sides to keep the load stable and snug to your back for bush bashing. You can also use the tabs for these as anchor points to add bungy if you want to secure items to the outside of the pack

  • Hydro sleeve for keeping you hydrated all day and a lid that gives a nice tidy path for the drinking hose

  • Made in New Zealand

  • No Worries 5yr Pack Guarantee

  • Cactus-Tough Lifetime Warranty

Miklat my "Go to" pack for everythingReview by mike
Just wanting to give long overdue thanks to Cactus for this pack.
I've used and abused many packs over the 35 odd years but over the last 5 or so this has been the one I've used for day trips more often than anything else.
Majority of my hunting is alpine work, tahr and chamois. The Milak has preformed beautifully the entire time-probably now in excess of 300 days-and still as good as new although quite bull tahr smelly now!!. I've made a couple of modifications with the chch shop putting a chest strap on and a mate custom fitting some loops for a Kuiu rifle scabbard to attach to it. I believe my pack may have been one of the first made as it has aspects of the Patrol on it but not sure?
I have had it fully chocker with meat and it still comfortably works on the down hill decent an aspect often overlooked. Locked with chest and waist belt it is sturdy and safe in technical climbing situations the crampons and ice axe holder work very well. When relatively empty with all side straps tightened it is great in the tight monkey scrub. As you say "keep it simple-stupid" for this pack works.
I have guided hunters who have had a range of packs and have had the chance to try and assess different ones and except for weight have yet to see one top the Miklat. Its so versatile that I am able to adjust the straps and my 13 year old son can use it comfortably.
I use it for back country snowboarding missions and a splitboard, avo shovel, adjustable poles, probe, crampons, skins and other critical gear are stowed or attached and it performs admirably.
The only minor improvements I could offer would be the top pocket a bit bigger as a set of 10x42 binoculars(number 1 used tool for a tahr hunter) is a bit tight and nothing else can fit in at the same time-ie spare ammo, camera, range finder etc.
Second when fully, fully loaded the top flap struggles to cover over the drawcord.
Very minor details and the bulletproof and proven aspects of the rest of the pack far out weight these.
Congratulations on the product range and the rare time i get into the Chch store its great to see the range growing. By the way Supertrou and Drednought are awesome in Matagouri!
Cheers Mike

Sleek, simple, and strong.Review by Nate
I've had my Miklat for a couple years now, figure it's about time to chip in a written review now that I've become an evangelical Cactus customer. This is quite simply a perfect day pack for NZ bush. No flashy delicate bits to get ripped to shreds during a bush bash, one big zip on the lid and a massive main compartment that can be compressed down or widened out. The reservoir pocket is good for its purpose, but I generally put my groundsheet/tarp in there to add a bit of structure to the back, though the foam is always comfortable. Plenty of room for a summer/hut overnight trip, too. Also my favourite piece of carry on luggage, as you can easily travel for several days with one of these.

Absolutely trashed it on a horribly cold and wet survival training night, shivering in an improvised shelter I used my Miklat as a mat/pillow, getting it filthy and wet in the process. Walked into the shower with it and my shell layer on afterwards, and watched the fern and dirt wash out, easy peasy. Dry and ready the next morning, even if I wasn't! (Posted on 2/07/16)

Cactus quality is a pearlReview by Hungry broke traveling folk
I'd been to y'alls spot down in Christchurch. Was very impressed by your stock and customer service. Waited till I got home before I ordered the Miklat. It's phenomenal piece of gear. I expected it in a few weeks and it arrived in one. Great shipping from NZ to the east coast of the U.S. I'm so very happy with the pack good ol braggin rights. Will be telling all my friends to kick an extra buck and buy cactus gear it's well worth it. Thank you guys for people such a legit company. Cheers. (Posted on 23/03/16)
What an awesome piece of kit.Review by PHILIPO
I brought one of the limited "coloured" Miklat's a few months back, It turned up in a recyclable paper rubbish bag for packaging and the first time I laid eyes on it was a "hell yeah" moment. I love the felling of buying quality gear & the Miklat is exactly that.

It's light weight, very well made & bomb proof, I'm a bit of a short arse ( 5'8" ) but this pack fits me spot on, I have had it loaded with 20kg's of venison which it carried very well & I never had to worry about stressing the pack or it not being up to the task.

Only thing it's lacking is a key loop in the top zip pocket, But's that's a small gripe on an other wise great product. Well done Cactus

The bone haulerReview by adam
The first time I went hunting in the South Island two of my friends had this pack. They said it was the best day pack in the world. So I got one and had to agree with them. Ridiculously solid, durable but small enough to carry on a plane. It has been my constant companion for travel, work and hunting since I bought it. It is now the benchmark that I compare all packs to. Fun fact: it can hold the meat from a whole heard of goats. (Posted on 13/07/15)
